I am 58 years and a diabetic as a result of hereditary?

i work out for 20 minutes at a stretch counting about 3000 steps of skipping and i am doing it for years and inspite of all my work outs i got diabetes because of a hereditary problem and i could not avoid it..Is this much of excercise is enough for me at this age to keep my self fit?
